Publication A CASE OF L-2 HYDROXYGLUTARIC ACIDURIA PRESENTING AS FEBRILE SEIZURE(2014-01-01) Calik, M.; Tuncer, F. N.; Sarikaya, S.; Karakas, O.; Cece, H.; Iscan, AKIN; İŞCAN, AKINA case of L-2 hydroxyglutaric aciduria presenting as febrile seizure: L-2 hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L2HGA) is a rare, infantile-onset, autosomal recessive organic aciduria affecting exclusively the central nervous system. A case is reported here of L2HGA presenting with macrocephaly and febrile seizure. Although there have been reports of epilepsy associated with L2HGA, to the best of our knowledge this is the second case in literature of febrile seizure in a patient with L2HGA. This report suggests that detailed neurological evaluation of macrocephalic children with febrile convulsion is important. Moreover, metabolic and genetic investigations may be necessary for these kinds of patients.Publication A class of sulfonamides with strong inhibitory action against the α-carbonic anhydrase from Trypanosoma cruzi.(2013-07-25) GÜZEL-AKDEMIR, Ö; Akdemir, ATİLLA; PAN, P; VERMELHO, AB; PARKKILA, S; SCOZZAFAVA, A; CAPASSO, C; SUPURAN, CT; AKDEMİR, ATİLLAPublication A new index for the assessment of distal radius fractures involving the ulnar styloid.(2011-01-01) ORHUN, H; DURSUN, M; Gürkan, VOLKAN; SARıOĞLU, E; ALTUN, GAMZE; AKÇA, O; GÜRKAN, VOLKAN; ALTUN, GAMZEPublication A Novel Automatic Rapid Diagnostic Test Reader Platform(20.01.2016) Ozkan, Haydar; Kayhan, Osman SemihA novel automatic Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) reader platform is designed to analyze and diagnose target disease by using existing consumer cameras of a laptop-computer or a tablet. The RDT reader is useable with numerous lateral immunochromatographic assays and similar biomedical tests. The system has two different components, which are 3D-printed, low-cost, tiny, and compact stand and a decision program named RDT-AutoReader 2.0. The program takes the image of RDT, crops the region of interest (ROI), and extracts the features from the control end test lines to classify the results as invalid, positive, or negative. All related patient's personal information, image of ROI, and the e-report are digitally saved and transferred to the related clinician. Condition of the patient and the progress of the disease can be monitored by using the saved data. The reader platform has been tested by taking image from used cassette RDTs of rotavirus (RtV)/adenovirus (AdV) and lateral flow strip RDTs of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) before discarding them. The created RDT reader can also supply real-time statistics of various illnesses by using databases and Internet. This can help to inhibit propagation of contagious diseases and to increase readiness against epidemic diseases worldwide.Publication A Novel Isopimarane Diterpenoid with Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitory Activity from Nepeta sorgerae, an Endemic Species to the Nemrut Mountain(2012-06-01) Yilmaz, Anil; Caglar, Pinar; Dirmenci, Tuncay; Goren, Nezhun; Topcu, GÜLAÇTI; TOPÇU, GÜLAÇTIFrom the dichloromethane extract of Nepeta sorgerae, the isolation and structure elucidation are now reported of a new isopimarane diterpenoid, named sorgerolone, and two known triterpenoids, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid. Antioxidant activity of the extracts and the isolated terpenoids was determined by the DPPH free radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition (beta-carotene bleaching) methods. Anticholinesterase activity of the extracts and isolates was investigated by Ellman-s method against AChE and BChE enzymes. Although the antioxidant activity results were low, the AChE enzyme inhibition of the extracts and terpenoids was very promising.Publication A novel method for pulmonary embolism detection in CTA images(2014-03-23) Ozkan, Haydar; Osman, Onur; Sahin, Sinan; Boz, Ali FuatIn this paper, we propose a new computer-aided detection (CAD) - based method to detect pulmonary embolism (PE) in computed tomography angiography images (CTAI). Since lung vessel segmentation is the main objective to provide high sensitivity in PE detection, this method performs accurate lung vessel segmentation. To concatenate clogged vessels due to PEs, the starting region of PEs and some reference points (RPs) are determined. These RPs are detected according to the fixed anatomical structures. After lung vessel tree is segmented, the region, intensity, and size of PEs are used to distinguish them. We used the data sets that have heart disease or abnormal tissues because of lung disease except PE in this work. According to the results, 428 of 450 PEs, labeled by the radiologists from 33 patients, have been detected. The sensitivity of the developed system is 95.1% at 14.4 false positive per data set (FP/ds). With this performance, the proposed CAD system is found quite useful to use as a second reader by the radiologists. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. We aimed to evaluate whether hyperglycemia predicts inhospital mortality. We prospectively analyzed 503 consecutive patients. The patients were divided into tertiles according to the admission glucose levels. Tertile I: glucose 145 mg/dL (n = 169). Inhospital mortality was 0 in tertile I, 2 in tertile II, and 9 in tertile III (P < .02). Cardiogenic shock occurred more frequently in tertile III compared to tertiles I and II (10% vs 4.1% and 0.6%, respectively, P = .01). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that patients in tertile III had significantly higher risk of inhospital major adverse cardiac events compared to patients in tertile I (odds ratio: 9.55, P < .02). Admission hyperglycemia predicts inhospital adverse cardiac events in mortality and acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in patients that underwent primary PCI.Publication Airway changes in pregnant women before and after delivery(2015-06-01) AYDAS, A. S.; MUHAMMEDOGLU, N.; KUCUK, S.; SAIDOGLU, L.; BAŞARANOĞLU, GÖKÇENHigh incidence of difficult or failed intubation in obstetric patients is still a major problem to challenge anaesthesiologists. Although the probability of difficult intubation is impossible to predict preoperatively, some simple, practical bedside tests may help. This study used five simple tests in an attempt to better evaluate airway changes in pregnant women before and after delivery.Publication An Electrophysiological Study of Peripheral Polyneuropathy in Brucellosis(2013-08-01) BENBIR, Gulcin; TURSUN, Irfan; Akkoyunlu, YASEMİN; Kiziltan, Meral E.; AKKOYUNLU, YASEMİNBackground: Brucellosis is an anthropozoonotic disease with heterogeneous clinical presentations.
