Background: This study investigated the prevalence and correlation of vitamin D deficiency and the relationship between vitamin D andmicroalbuminuria in patients with diabetes in primary care. Methods: Two hundred and ninety six Turkish adults with type 2 diabetesfrom the Family Medicine outpatient clinic divided into two groups according to vitamin D levels were included in the study. The first groupconsisted of 152 patients with insufficient vitamin D levels (<10 ng/mL) and the second group consisted of 144 patients with vitamin D deficiency(10–30 ng/mL). The relationship between vitamin D levels and the level of microalbuminuria was evaluated in the two groups. Results: The mean vitamin D level was 22.8 ± 17.8 ng/mL and the mean HbA1c level was 7.56 ± 1.65%. When the patient groupswere evaluated according to vitamin D levels, HbA1c values were significantly higher in patients with a vitamin D level of lower than 10ng/mL (p=0.027). Vitamin D levels were not significantly different between patients with different stages of renal failure (p=0.288),whereas the level of microalbuminuria was significantly different (p=0.006).Conclusion: This study found that the level of microalbuminuria was overtly higher in patients with vitamin D deficiency compared to patientswith vitamin D insufficiency among Turkish adults with type 2 diabetes in primary health care indicating a greater need for vitamin Dsupplementation in primary health care in Turkey. Keywords: Type 2 diabetes mellitus, vitamin D, HbA1c,microalbuminuria, primary care
