Introduction:Inflammation and oxidative stress are known to be associated with chronic diseases, such as essential hypertension. Some trace elements also play a role in the oxidant/antioxidant system and inflammation processes. In this study we aim to investigate a relationship between selenium, zinc, copper, superoxide dismutase, TNF-α,IL-6,IL-4,IL-10,IL-1β and some metabolic parameters playing role essential hypertension.Materials/Methods:116 essential hypertensive patients and 40 healthy controls were studied.Serum superoxide dismutase,TNF-α,IL-4,IL-10,IL-6 and IL-1β were measured by ELISA assay.Selenium, zinc and copper levels were measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES).Serum biochemical parameters of study subjects were analyzed by auto-analyzers.Results: Serum selenium levels showed a positive correlation with waist circumference and copper(r=0.172, p=0.05;r=0.229,P<0.014,respectively).Additionally, serum zinc levels showed a positive correlation with glucose and copper levels(r=0.221,P<0.014;r=0.173,P<0.05,respectively).Moreover, superoxide dismutase activities found a positive correlation with body mass index(BMI) and IL-8(r=0.562,P<0.012;r=0.969,P<0.007,respectively).IL-4 levels found a positive correlation with glucose, systolic and diastolic pressure values(r=0.340,P<0.026;r=0.363,P<0.030,r=0.290,P<0.050,respectively).Also,IL-10 levels showed a positive correlation with systolic and diastolic pressure values(r=0.299,P<0.046 and r=0.287, P<0.050, respectively). However, there was a negative correlation between IL-1β and glucose levels(r=-0.302,P<0.05). There was also,a negative correlation between TNF-α and systolic, and diastolic pressure(r=-0.269,P<0.05;r=-0.307,P<0.05, respectively).Superoxide dismutase activities found a negative correlation with TNF-α(r=-0.957, P<0.043).Conclusion: We concluded that the circulatory changes of trace elements, oxidant/antioxidant status and inflammatory cytokines in hypertensive patients may play a role in the occurrence of various complications by affecting cardio-metabolic parameters.
