Abstract

Smoking is one of the biggest preventable causes of premature deaths and morbidity in the 21st century. Smoking causes many diseases such as COPD, stroke, lung cancer, emphysema, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Smoking is the most common type of addiction in today's societies. Factors such as gender, age, economic level, occupational problems, family environment and education level are also effective in the prevalence of smoking in young population. Accordingly, it is necessary to evaluate the impact of smoking on health. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of physical activity, sleep quality and quality of life of smoker and non-smoker university students. The study was completed with the participation of 187 female and 74 male students with a mean age of 19.00 (17-25) years and body mass index 21.48 (15,60-40.09) kg / m2. Participants were divided into two groups as the smokers (Group 1) and non-smokers (Group 2). The nicotine dependence levels of the smoker university students were evaluated by Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Sleep quality of all participants was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), physical activity levels by International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and quality of life by using Quality of Life Short Form (SF-36). Windows IBM SPSS Statistics 22 package program was used for statistical analysis. When the weight, height, BMI values of the groups were compared, the values in the second group were significantly lower (p <0.05). In the statistical analysis between the two groups, high physical activity and IPAQ total scores were significantly higher in the first group (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the PSQI and SF-36 sub-parameters of the two groups (p> 0.05). In the first group, it was found that as the nicotine addiction increased the quality of sleep worsened, as the sleep duration increased the BMI values increased, and as the pack-year value and nicotine dependence increased the time spent to fall asleep also increased. (P <0.05). As the nicotine dependence of the first group increased, the physical function and vitality values related to the quality of life negatively affected, and the increase in the pack-year value decreased the physical function score significantly (p <0.05). In the first group, it was found that the increase in the total score of physical activity significantly increased the values of social function and general health status (p <0.05). It was found that moderate physical activity had a significant positive effect on quality of life and overall health (p <0.05). In the first group, there were statistically significant negative correlations between the quality of life scores and PSQI sub-parameters except sleep duration and drug use (p <0.05). Our study showed that the students in the first group had higher physical activity and physical activity total scores than the second group and there was no difference between the two groups in terms of sleep quality and quality of life. It was determined that students had poor sleep quality and quality of life which has been at a lower level than norm values according to Turkey.
