Abstract

Objective: In this study we compare locally flax oil and glycerol aplication for reducing adhesions formationafter thyroidectomy in a rat model. Materials and methods: 18 female Wistar Albino rats (medium weight: 275 gr, medium age: 4.5 month) were randomly assigned to three groups. First group received %0.9 NaCl (n:6) is control group, second group received glycerol (n:6), third group received flax oil (n:6) as anti-adhesive barriers. In all groups, we used 0.1 ml liquid in the perithyroidal operation field and all rats were sacrificed on 14.th day. The surgical fields were evaluated for macroscopic and microscopicadhesion formation. Results:Medium macroscopic adhesion score in control group was 3.0±0.0, in glycerol group was 1.33±0.52 and in flax oil group was 1,67±0.53. Medium histopathological fibrosis score in control group was 2.33±0.82, in glycerol group was 0.67±0.52 and in flax oil group 0.83±0.75. Both glycerol and flax oil groups' histopahtological fibrosis scores and macroscopic adhesion scores were significantly low than control group (p<0.05). There was no sicnificant differances between the each groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: This study suggests that both glycerol and flax oil decreases the incidence of posthyroidectomy adhesions in a rat model. And we noticed that glycerol is more effective.
