Abstract

INTRODUCTIONSialoliths are calcified obstructions in salivary gland ducts, most commonly affecting the submandibular gland. While sialoliths typically measure less than 1cm, those exceeding 1.5cm are considered giant sialoliths. This presentation aims to provide detailed insights into 4 rare cases of giant sialoliths.CASE DESCRIPTIONCASE-1:76-year-old male patient had an exposed calcified mass appearance on the right floor of the mouth. On cone beam computed tomography(CBCT), a mixed lesion which is approximately 15x9.2x28mm was observed.CASE-2: 66-year-old male presented with a hard swelling in the mouth floor. Radiologically, two oval-cylindrical radiopaque lesions were found in the left mandibular corpus, the largest measuring 30x10x10mm. Patients referred with the diagnosis of sialolith were operated.CASE-3:56-year-old male patient presented with swelling in the right floor of the mouth. Radiological images revealed a heterogeneous radiopaque mass measuring 15x12x14mm.CASE-4:59-year-old male patient presented with a request for prosthetic rehabilitation. A radiopaque-mass measuring 14x6x19mm was observed on radiographic imaging in the left floor of the mouth. Patients referred with the diagnosis of sialolith were operated.DISCUSSIONSialoliths are often observed in males and frequently affect the submandibular gland. Our study findings were consistent with this pattern, as all four cases involved male patients with sialoliths in the submandibular gland. The use of CBCT imaging is crucial for accurately locating sialoliths and identifying giant sialoliths.CONCLUSION/CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCESialoliths are diagnosed through anamnesis, clinical-examination, and radiological-imaging. Treatment modalities range from conservative measures to surgical intervention, with considerations for the size, location, and patient\"s comfort level. Early detection and appropriate management are essential for optimizing patient outcomes.
