Juvenile nasopharyngeal angio-broma is the most common benign tumor of the nasopharynx with complaints of unilateral nasal obstruction and recurrent nosebleeds in the young male population. Despite being a benign tumor, it can be aggressively destructive in surrounding tissues and bones by acting locally. (e gold standard treatment method is the surgical excision of the tumor. (is case report is a case of angio-broma, a 32-year-old asymptomatic male patient with no evidence of clinical signs and endoscopic examination, which is recognized as a localized vascular mass lesion in the right sphenoid sinus on the cranial MR imaging. We prepared this case report that may represent an angio-broma localized only within the sphenoid sinus which is very rare in the literature.

Audiological findings in pediatric perineal allergic rhinitis (house dust mite allergy) patients
(2014-05-01) AKSOY, Fadlullah; Nursoy, MUSTAFA ATİLLA; Dogan, REMZİ; Ozturan, ORHAN; Eren, SABRİ BAKİ; VEYSELLER, Bayram; Ozkaya, EMİN; DEMIR, Aysegul Dogan; OZTURK, Burak; NURSOY, MUSTAFA ATİLLA; AKSOY, FADLULLAH; DOĞAN, REMZI; ÖZTURAN, ORHAN; EREN, SABRİ BAKİ; ÖZKAYA, EMİN
Allergic rhinitis is the type 1 hypersensitivity reaction of the nasal mucosa and its primary mediator is Ig E. It is most frequently observed in children and adolescents. Our purpose in this study is to investigate the impact of allergy on hearing functions in children with perineal allergic rhinitis (house dust mite allergy). 50 perineal allergic rhinitis (house dust mite allergy) patients (33 male, 17 female patients, aged between 6 and 15, average age 10.4) and 20 control patients (12 male, 8 female, aged between 6 and 15, average age 11.2) underwent high frequency pure tone audiometry, acoustic reflex, otacoustic emission (OAE) and auditory brainstem potentials to assess their auditory functions. No statistically significant difference was detected between the study group and the control group with respect to their hearing thresholds (250-16,000 Hz). No statistically significant difference was detected as a result of the comparison between the study group and control group in terms of their signal-noise ratios at Distortion Product OAE in all frequencies (996-8,004 Hz). No statistically significant difference was detected between the study group and the control group in terms of the 1st, 3rd and 5th wave latencies and 1-3, 3-5 and 1-5 inter-peak values. This study is the first study where the audiological functions of the pediatric perineal allergic rhinitis (house dust mite allergy) patients were assessed. No significant difference was detected between the group of pediatric perineal allergic rhinitis (house dust mite allergy) patients and the control group with respect to their audiological functions.

Kikuchi Fujimato disease (KFD) also know as histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) is a benign, self limiting disease, which commonly affects young women under 30 years of age. Most of the cases resolve in a six month period. Laboratory and clinical findings of KFD show similarities with tuberculosis lymphadenitis, mailgn lymphoma, other malign and benign diseases. The diagnosis is established on the basis of histology of lymph node excisional biopsy. The differentiation of KFD from Sistemik Lupus Eritematosus (SLE) can sometimes be problematic because both can show similar clinical and histological features. KFD and SLE can be seen together. Forty two years-old female patient diagnosed with KFD was discussed in light of current literature.

Application of Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center (CCCRC) olfactory test to healthy Turkish volunteers, obtain normative data set and analyse the role of age, sex and smoking on olfactory scores. The present study was conducted at Bezmialem Vakif University, Department of Otorhinolaryngology. Total of 426 healthy volunteers were subjected to CCCRC olfactory test which consists of n-butanol smell threshold test and smell identification test. Olfactory function score was assessed (0: worst score; 7: best score) and mean scores were calculated. Mean age was (36.7 ± 11.1; range, 17–68). 46.2 % of the subjects were male and 53.8 % were female; 37.1 % were smokers and 62.9 % were nonsmokers. Mean n-butanol threshold score was 6.36 out of 7, mean identification score was 6.34 and mean total score was 6.35. According to CCCRC score: there were no anosmic individuals, 0.5 % were severely hyposmic, 2.6 % were moderately hyposmic,15.3 % were mildly hyposmic and 81.6 % were normosmic. CCCRC olfactory test is cost-effective, simple and practical. It can be easily applied in clinical settings. The CCCRC olfactory test is appropriate for assessment of olfactory function: Turkish population is familiar in terms of the odors used in CCCRC test. The power of this study is that it provides a normative data set against which many factors can be compared.

Tension pneumocephalus: an extremely small defect leading to an extremely serious problem
(2013-11-01) Aksoy, Fadlullah; Dogan, REMZİ; Ozturan, ORHAN; TUGRUL, Selahattin; Yildirim, YAVUZ SELİM; AKSOY, FADLULLAH; DOĞAN, REMZI; ÖZTURAN, ORHAN; YILDIRIM, YAVUZ SELİM
Background: Pneumocephalus is a pathology characterized by air influx into the intracranial region. It may occur after head trauma and rarely after endoscopic sinus surgery. As the amount of air increases, this can cause neurological disorders with a mass effect and this condition is called tension pneumocephalus.
