    Evaluation of the Relationship Between Maxillary Labial Frenulum Attachment Types, Periodontal Health, and Dental Caries in Preschool Children

    Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate any possible relation between maxillary labial frenulum attachment type on periodontal status and dental caries in pre14school children. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted for six months among the children who were admitted for treatment at a university clinic. The children aged between 3 to 6 years were enrolled in the study. The types of maxillary labial frenulum attachment were recorded as mucosal, gingival, papillary, and papillary penetrating types. Plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and dental status (dmft) of maxillary primary incisors were evaluated. Kruskal-Wallis and Pearson’s chi-squared tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: A total of 214 children (mean age was 4.4±0.9 years) were evaluated. The most common maxillary frenulum attachment type was the gingival type (45.8%), while the papillary penetrating type (13.1%) was the least common. The PI and GI scores in children with mucosal type frenulum were lower than in children with the gingival, papillary, and papillary penetrating types (p<0.01). The dmft scores were lower in children with mucosal type frenulum and higher in children with papillary type frenulum (p<0.01). Conclusion: Papillary and papillary penetrating types of frenulum attachments were associated with a decline in periodontal health and higher caries incidence in maxillary primary incisors.

    Simulation of three intraoral radiographic techniques in pediatric dental patients: subjective comfort assessment using the VAS and Wong-Baker FACES Pain Raiting Scale

    Background Perception of pain associated with intraoral radiography in pediatric patients was evaluated through statistical comparisons of data obtained using the Wong-Baker FACES Pain Raiting Scale (WBFPRS) and visual analog scale (VAS) scoring.MethodsA total of 75 pediatric patients aged 6-12years were included in this study. Simulations of each of three radiological methods (analog films, CCD sensor and phosphorus plates) were performed on 25 pediatric patients. Following the simulations, the meaning of each facial expression on the WBFPRS and the numbers on the VAS were explained to each child. For the comparison between groups, the homogeneity of the variances was tested with Levene-s test; because the variances were not homogeneous, Welch-s test was used. Tamhane-s T2 test was used because the homogeneity assumption was not provided to determine the source of the difference between the groups.ResultsWhen the conventional method was compared to the PSPL (photostimulable phosphor luminescence) method, no significant differences were noted in either the WBFPRS or VAS results (p >0.05). The results obtained from both of the scales were significantly different between the conventional method and the CCD sensor method (p<0.05). When the PSPL and CCD sensors were compared, a significant difference was observed for the WBFPRS (p<0.05). It was found the highest level of pain scores when used the CCD sensor method than the analog film and PSPL methods (p<0.05).ConclusionsIt is expected that digital radiographic techniques will be improved in the future and that their disadvantages will be eliminated, resulting in imaging devices that are more comfortable for pediatric patients.

    Polymerization characteristics of colored compomers cured with different LED units

    Aim: Incomplete polymerization of a resin material used for dental restoration affects the properties of the restoration. We evaluated the structural and mechanical properties of three different colored compomers cured with three different LED units to observe the characteristic changes occurring in different matches. Methods: Polytetrafluoroethylene molds (5 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were used to prepare disk-shaped sample specimens. Nine sample groups (each of five specimens) were prepared, three each of different compomer resin colors (gold, berry, and silver). Samples were cured using three different LED units (Optima, VALO, and Demi Ultra), according to the manufacturers’ instructions. Microstructural properties of samples were characterized by determining the degree of curing using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and by analyzing sample morphology under a scanning electron microscope. The Vickers hardness, compressive strength, and elastic modulus of the samples were measured to investigate their mechanical properties. Results: The degrees of curing decreased in the order of silver > berry > gold for all curing units. Conversely, gold compomers exhibited poorer mechanical values than the berry and silver counterparts. The Optima 10 unit yielded slightly higher degrees of curing than the other devices, followed by Demi Ultra and VALO light-curing units, respectively. Conclusion: The resin color affected the structural and mechanical properties of the compomers, possibly as a result of the complex interactions and relationships between the irradiation light and resin material, such as light absorbance and reflectance; thus, depending on the color as well as the curing protocol.
