Purpose: Physiotherapists do not have the opportunity to acquire sufficient knowledge and skills in tissue/organ donation and transplantation as part of their education. The aim was to examine the level of knowledge and attitudes of physiotherapy students regarding organ donation and transplantation. Method: The study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional study and conducted among the four academic years of physiotherapy students. A total of 161 students participated in this study. The level of knowledge and attitudes were assessed using the ‘Organ-Tissue Donation and Transplantation Knowledge Scale’ and the ‘Organ Donation Attitude Scale’ along with the sociodemographic information form. Results: Overall score of the ‘Organ-Tissue Donation and Transplantation Knowledge Scale’ was 13.04 ± 2.51, which corresponds to a good level of knowledge. The mean scores of students' attitudes toward organ donation measured by the ‘Organ Donation Attitude Scale’ were 99.26±13.44 for the ‘humanity and moral conviction’, 22.29±7.98 for the ‘fear of medical neglect’, and 29.34±9.65 for the ‘fear of bodily mutilation’ subdimensions, corresponding to a high level of attitude. A significant majority of students (90.1%, n=145) knew the definition of brain death. Conclusions: The role of healthcare professionals in informing and directing patients and their relatives about organ donation is important in increasing the awareness and positive attitudes about organ donation. Well-structured educational programs can enhance the role of physiotherapists to promote public organ donation knowledge and attitude. Efforts should be made to provide physiotherapists with comprehensive and appropriate training on organ donation and transplantation.

Ergogenic supplements are defined as substances that contribute to or support the doing or production of a job. These supplements are used for many purposes such as increasing the performance of athletes, accelerating recovery in athletes, improving capacity, and reducing and preventing muscle injuries and muscle fatigue. Ergogenic supplements, which are of great interest to athletes and trainers, are classified as nutritional aids, pharmacological aids, psychological aids, mechanical and biomechanical aids, and physiological aids. Among these supplements, they are the most actively used nutritional aids and attract attention in the market as muscle-building nutritional supplements, weight-reducing nutritional supplements, performance-enhancing nutritional supplements, and general health-promoting nutritional supplements. Protein and amino acids provide benefits in long-term or short-term explosive power activities. Fats are used as the main fuel in long-term aerobic exercises. In addition, caffeine, ginseng, antioxidants, and coenzyme Q10 also serve as ergogenic nutritional supplements. It has been reported in studies that minerals such as B, C and E vitamins, chromium, magnesium, iron, and zinc affect sports performance in a good way. In case of deficiency of the aforementioned vitamins and minerals in athletes, many negativities occur. In this study, the use of ergogenic nutritional supplements by athletes before, during, and after training was compiled using the current literature on the types of these supplements.

Abstract Background: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome is a condition characterized by thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and acute kidney injury, which can exhibit a poor prognosis. Gene mutations play a key role in this disease, which may be sporadic or familial. Methods: We studied, 13 people from the same family were investigated retrospectively for gene mutations of familial atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome after a patient presented to our emergency clinic with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome and reported a family history of chronic renal failure. Results: The pS1191L mutation in the complement factor H gene was heterozygous in 6 people from the family of the patient with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. One of these people was our patient with acute renal failure and the other two are followed up by the Nephrology Clinic due to chronic renal failure. The other 3 persons showed no evidence of renal failure. The index case had a history of 6 sibling deaths; two of them died of chronic renal failure. Plasmapheresis and fresh frozen plasma treatment was given to our patient. When patient showed no response to this treatment, eculizumab therapy was started. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that a thorough family history should be taken in patients with atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. These patients may have familial type of the disease and they should be screened genetically. Eculizumab should be the first choice in the treatment with plasmapheresis. It should be kept in mind that the use of eculizumab as prophylaxis in post-transplant therapy is extremely important for prevention of rejection.

Abstract Phenomenon : The hidden curriculum in medical education determines what kind of physicians students will become. Although the formal program affects students to become physicians, the hidden cirriculum has a much greater effect on this issue. If a medical faculty wants to improve the quality of the physicians, it should be able to reveal and develop the hidden curriculum of the faculty. Approach : In our study, it is aimed to reveal the hidden structure in medical faculties by applying the “Hidden Cirriculum Scale” to 344 students studying in different medical faculties in Turkey. Findings : It has been seen that the preference of specialization of the students who adapt to hidden cirriculum is in favor of internal and surgical medical sciences, that is, their professional adaptation is more. In addition, it is observed that the students studying in the upper classes are more adaptable to the program. Insights : Studies on hidden cirriculum education in medical faculties can provide innovative insights into medical education. It can increase the awareness of physicians in choosing their fields of science and their desire to be a good physician. In order to increase the quality of graduates of medical faculties and to train good physicians, students' awareness and adaptation of hidden cirriculum is necessary, therefore, an unwritten comprehensive medical faculty curriculum is of great importance in both online and face-to-face education.

Abstract The unprecedented increase in SARS-CoV-2 sequence data limits the application of alignment-dependent approaches to study viral diversity. Herein, we applied our recently published UNIQmin, an alignment-free tool to study the protein sequence diversity of SARS-CoV-2 (sub-species) and its higher taxonomic lineage ranks (species, genus, and family). Only less than 0.5% of the reported SARS-CoV-2 protein sequences are required to represent the inherent viral peptidome diversity, which only increases to a mere ∼2% at the family rank. This is expected to remain relatively the same even with further increases in the sequence data. The findings have important implications in the design of vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics, whereby the number of sequences required for consideration of such studies is drastically reduced, short-circuiting the discovery process, while still providing for a systematic evaluation and coverage of the pathogen diversity.
