    Correlation of Body Composition Analysis with Anthropometric Measurements in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

    Objective: This study investigates correlations between different methods for diagnosis of protein energy malnutrition (PEM) in peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods: Twenty four patients were included. Patients with amputations, infections, peritonitis, malignancies and PD duration less than three months were excluded. Physical examination findings, laboratory results and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Body composition analysis was performed with multi-frequency bioimpedance analyzer. Dialysis malnutrition score (DMS) was calculated. The correlations of different parameters were searched. Results: Eleven patients were female and 13 patients were male. Mean age was 58.9±12.6 years. Median dialysis duration was 25 (interquartile range: 14) months. Protein percentage was negatively correlated with fat percentage (r=-0.785; p<0.001), triceps skinfold thickness (SFT) (r=-0.641; p<0.001), biceps SFT (r=-0.685; p<0.001), body mass index (BMI) (r=-0.867; p<0.001), mid-arm circumference (r=-0.680; p=0.001). Fat percentage was positively correlated with BMI (r=0.780; p<0.001), biceps SFT (r=0.817; p<0.001), triceps SFT (r=0.901; p<0.001) and mid-arm circumference (r=0.558; p=0.005) Albumin was negatively correlated with DMS (r= -0.439; p=0.032). DMS and albumin were not correlated with bioimpedance and anthropometry Conclusion: Albumin is a marker of PEM in PD patients. Malnutrition scores may be used as adjunct methods. Increase in fat mass and percentage may influence the interpretation of anthropometric measurements.

    COVID-19 Infection in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: A Comparative Outcome Study with Patients on Hemodialysis and Patients without Kidney Disease

    Objectives: There is limited data about coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) characteristics and results in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and outcomes among PD patients and compare them with matched hemodialysis (HD) patients and a control group without kidney disease. Methods: We included 18 PD patients and consecutive age- and gender-matched 18 HD and 18 patients without kidney disease (control group) registered into the Turkish Society of Nephrology database including 1301 COVID-19 patients. We compared demographic, clinical, radiological, laboratory data, and outcomes namely intensive care unit (ICU) admission, mechanical ventilation, mortality, and composite outcome (death and/or ICU admission). Results: ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and mortality rates in PD patients (27.8%, 22.2%, and 22.2%, respectively) and the HD group (16.7%, 11.1%, and 16.7%, respectively) were higher than the control group (11.1%, 11.1%, and 5.6%, respectively), but intergroup comparison did not reveal difference. A total of 11 (20.3%) patients had composite outcome (6 PD patients, 3 HD patients, and 2 patients in the control group). In Cox regression analysis, higher age and higher CRP level were related to increased risk of composite outcome. Adjusted rate of composite outcome in PD group was significantly higher than the control group (P =.050). This rate was similar in HD and control groups (P =.30). Conclusions: Combined in-hospital mortality and/or ICU admission of PD patients with COVID-19 was significantly higher than the control patients. There is a need for careful surveillance of PD patients for infection signs and prompt treatment of COVID-19.

    Background: Many markers have been proposed for CVD risk assessment in dialysis population. Apelin is a peptide that has roles in cardiovascular functions and volume regulation namely vasodilation, decreased blood pressure (BP), positive inotropic effect and inhibition of antidiuretic hormone release. The aim of this study was to examine relationship of apelin levels with echocardiographic findings and laboratory parameters related with cardiovascular function and bone mineral metabolism among peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients.
