(2015-11-19) CELIK, K; ÇıKRıKÇıOĞLU, MA; HALAC, G; KILIC, ERDEM; AYHAN, S; OZARAS, N; Karatoprak, CUMALİ; YILDIZ, KEMALETTİN; YILDIZ, RS; ZORLU, MEHMET; CAKIRCA, MUSTAFA; KıSKAÇ, MUHARREM; KILIÇ, ERDEM; YILDIZ, KEMALETTİN; ZORLU, MEHMET; KARATOPRAK, CUMALİ; ÇAKIRCA, MUSTAFA; KISKAÇ, MUHARREM
Background: Endocan is a recently introduced marker of endothelial dysfunction. The objective of this study was to compare serum endocan levels in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and control subjects in order to elucidate whether RLS is associated with endothelial dysfunction. Methods: A total of 31 drug naïve female patients with RLS and 31 age- and BMI-matched women were included in the study. Patients with pathological or physiological conditions or with a history of medication use that could potentially influence endothelial functions were excluded, as well as those with alcohol or drug abuse history. The two groups were compared with routine blood tests and serum endocan levels. Results: Patients with RLS had lower serum endocan levels than the controls (P=0.037). There was a negative bivariate correlation between RLS severity score and serum endocan levels (r=-0.406, P=0.023). While white blood cell count was significantly higher in RLS group, 25-hydroxy vitamin D3, vitamin B12, transferrin saturation rate, and HDL-cholesterol were significantly lower. Creatininemia and diastolic blood pressure were also marginally insignificantly lower in RLS group. Due to the presence of differences between two groups in these variables, a linear regression analysis was performed that showed a positive association between endocan and creatininemia (β=0.310, P=0.022), and a negative association between endocan and RLS (β=-0.502, P,0.001). Conclusion: The results of this study seem to suggest that patients with RLS may have better endothelial functions when compared with the general population and that these patients may be better protected against atherosclerosis

Primary hyperparathyroidism is an endocrine disorder occurring due to increased secretion of parathormone resulting in a complex of clinical, anatomical, and biochemical alterations. On the other hand, excision of a parathyroid adenoma can normalize the metabolic status. A 24-year-old man was referred to the hospital with bilateral swelling and spontaneous gingival bleeding from posterior of the mandible also with radiolucent well-demarcated lesions bilaterally in the mandibular third molar regions. After consultations, the patient was hospitalized in the endocrinology department where further tests were performed due to highly increased PTH level as 714 pg/ml. Bilateral brown tumors started to regress spontaneously, and no additional surgery was required after subtotal parathyroidectomy was performed. The presented case is the first patient whose bilateral brown tumors in the jaws spontaneously and totally healed after subtotal parathyroidectomy and endocrinal therapy who was strictly followed up for 4 years even though the lesions were associated with impacted third molars.

Background: The aim of this study was to histomorphometrically compare the implant-host integration between retrieved implants and new implants. Methods: Jaws in 10 male beagle dogs were divided into four groups, and 36 dental implants were inserted into the jaws. In groups 1 and 2, experimental peri-implantitis was induced within 2 months after implant insertion. In group 1, surface decontamination of implants was achieved using air-flow and citric acid. In group 2, implants were sterilized with autoclave after air-flow and citric acid surface decontamination. Subsequently, these implants were inserted in contralateral jaws of the same dogs and a 3-month period was allowed for osseointegration. In group 3, the implants were removed from human jaws due to peri-implantitis and were inserted into dog jaws following surface cleaning protocol and sterilization with autoclave and a 3-month period was allowed for osseointegration. Group 4 was set as the control group. After the osseointegration period, all the animals were sacrificed. The degree of osseointegration in all groups was evaluated by evaluating the ISQ values and by using histomorphometric measurements. Results: Histological findings showed that bone-implant contact (BIC) percentage (mean ± SD) was 83.39% ± 6.37 in group 1, 79.93% ± 11.83 in group 2, 75.45% ± 9.09 in group 3, and 80.53 ± 5.22 in group 4. Moreover, the resonance frequency analysis (RFA) and ISQ values were similar in all four groups both before and after the implantation. Conclusions: The results of this experimental study indicated that there is no significant difference between new dental implants and re-used dental implants with regards to osseointegration around the implant.

(2018-09-01) YÜCESOY, TÜRKER; KILIÇ, ERDEM; Ocak, Hakan; ALKAN, ALPER; DENİZ, KEMAL; YÜCESOY, TÜRKER; KILIÇ, ERDEM; ALKAN, ALPER
Not only diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is a malignancy, but also is initially and orally diagnosed in early stages. However, it could be misdiagnosed with other oral pathologies. However yet, early diagnosis is still crucial for the prognosis, morbidity, and mortality in such cases. Additionally, whole-body scanning with positron emission tomography/computed tomography should be performed for diagnosis and treatment process.

Objectives: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a severe side effect of antiresorptive agents. The aim of this study was to investigate the osseous changes in patients with MRONJ. Methods: Cone beam CT (CBCT) images of 25 patients with MRONJ and controls were retrospectively evaluated. Buccal, lingual, apical cortical bone thicknesses; buccal, lingual, apical intracortical and cancellous bone density; diameter of mental foramen and incisive canal, and width of mental foramen were measured. Results: Buccal and apical cortical bone thicknesses were increased; however intracortical radiodensity values decreased in the Study Group when compared with the Control Group (p = 0.007, p = 0.001). Narrowing of incisive canal was observed in patients with MRONJ (p = 0.000). Conclusions: Clinician should have awareness about narrowing of incisive canal, apical and buccal cortical bone thickening, decreasing in cancellous bone radiodensity, and the lingual cortex destruction in patients with MRONJ.

Cisplatin is one of the effective chemotherapeutics in the treatment of several types of cancers. However, in addition to the efforts against to its toxicity, the amelioration of cisplatin sensitivity is an important point in treatment of cervical cancer. To do so, additional substances such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol in green tea, have been used in combination with chemotherapeutics. We aimed to investigate the possible molecular pathways to potentiate cervical cancer cell (HeLa) growth inhibition by combination therapy of cisplatin and EGCG. HeLa cells were treated with EGCG (25µM), cisplatin (250 nM), and their combination for 24 h. Cell viability was determined by MTS Assay. We analyzed the expressions of NF-κB p65, COX-2, Nrf2, HO-1, p-mTOR, p-p70S6K1, p-4E-BP1, and p-Akt byWestern blot analysis. Herein, we have demonstrated that EGCG works synergistic with cisplatin in inhibiting growth of cervical cancer cells. EGCG improved efficacy of cisplatin treatment in HeLa cells by regulating NFκB p65, COX-2, p-Akt, and p-mTOR pathways, whereas it increased the expression levels of Nrf2/HO-1 in combined therapy. Our observations revealed that EGCG increases the sensitiz

Soluble TNF-Like Weak Inducer of Apoptosis as a New Marker in Preeclampsia: A Pilot Clinical Study.
(2016-01-01) YILDIRIM, ZEYNEP BEYZA; SUMNU, A; BADEMLER, N; KILIC, ERDEM; SUMNU, G; KARADAG, S; GURSU, MELTEM; OZEL, A; BATMAZ, G; ATES, SEDA; Dane, B; OZTURK, S; YILDIRIM, ZEYNEP BEYZA; KILIÇ, ERDEM; GÜRSU, MELTEM; ATEŞ, SEDA; KILIÇOĞLU DANE, PAKİZER BANU
ntroduction: All findings of preeclampsia appear as the clinical consequences of diffuse endothelial dysfunction. Soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) was recently introduced as a TNF related cytokine in various inflammatory and noninflammatory disorders. sTWEAK was found to be related to endothelial dysfunction in patients with chronic kidney disease. In our study we aimed to compare sTWEAK levels in women with preeclampsia to corresponding levels in a healthy pregnant control group. Materials and methods: The study was undertaken with 33 patients with preeclampsia and 33 normal pregnant women. The concentration of sTWEAK in serum was calculated with an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Results: Serum creatinine, uric acid, LDH levels, and uPCR were significantly higher in the patient group compared to the control group. sTWEAK levels were significantly lower in preeclamptic patients (332 ± 144 pg/mL) than in control subjects (412 ± 166 pg/mL) (p = 0.04). Discussion: Our study demonstrates that sTWEAK is decreased in patients with preeclampsia compared to healthy pregnant women. There is a need for further studies to identify the role of sTWEAK in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and to determine whether it can be regarded as a predictor of the development of preeclampsia.

(2014-06-01) KıSKAÇ, MUHARREM; ZORLU, MEHMET; AKKOYUNLU, MUHAMMED EMİN; KILIC, ERDEM; CAKIRCA, MUSTAFA; Karatoprak, CUMALİ; YAVUZ, E; ARDIC, C; CAMLI, AHMET ADİL; CIKRIKCIOGLU, M; KART, L; KISKAÇ, MUHARREM; ZORLU, MEHMET; AKKOYUNLU, MUHAMMED EMİN; KILIÇ, ERDEM; KARATOPRAK, CUMALİ; ÇAKIRCA, MUSTAFA; ÇAMLI, AHMET ADİL
Background: Vaspin and lipocalin-2 are less-known recent members of adipocytokine family. There are ongoing studies investigating the role of vaspin ve lipocalin-2 in metabolic syndrome (MS). Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is independently associated with an increased prevalence of MS. We aimed to measure the levels of vaspin and lipocalin-2 which are secreted from adipocytes in patients with severe OSAS and examine the relationship between these two adipocytokines and OSAS. Methods: The study consisted of two groups: severe OSAS patients with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) of >30/h (OSAS group, 34 subjects) and age-matched healthy volunteers with a AHI <5/h (control group, 25 subjects) Serum levels of vaspin and lipocalin-2 in these two groups were compared. Results: Serum levels of vaspin were significantly lower in OSAS group; patients with severe OSAS compared with control group; healthy volunteers (OSAS group: 0.69±0.5 vs. control group: 1.24±1.13; P=0.034). The difference between the two groups in terms of serum levels of lipocalin-2 has not reached statistical significance (OSAS group: 61.6±18.2 vs. control group: 68.5±20.1; P=0.17). Conclusions: We found that serum vaspin levels were significantly lower in patients with severe OSAS compared with healthy controls. Lipocalin-2 levels were similar. The decrease in serum vaspin levels in severe OSAS patients may be important in diagnosis and follow-up of these patients.
