Objective: The aim of this study is to determine differences of levels of empathy among undergraduates in each year of their four-year programs of physiotherapy. Methods: During the 2014-2015 academic school year, 381 physiotherapy students were enlisted from two universities in Istanbul, one a foundation and the other a government university. The Turkish version of the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy was administered. Students were asked to indicate interest in particular physiotherapy specialties as well as their region of origin in Turkey. The Kruskal-Wallis analysis was used to determine differences among the four study years, and also to measure relationships between specialty interest, home-region, and empathy scores of the students. Empathy scores were also compared according to gender. Results: The difference of empathy scores between the students of the two universities was borderline significant (p=0.057). Empathy scores in both universities increased to a significant degree after school entrance and decreased in the final year. Levels of empathy did not change according to gender, specialty interest, or home-region (p=0.722, 0.524, and 0.309, respectively). Conclusions: This study points to the need for physiotherapy curricula that would enhance empathy and give students practice in exhibiting this valuable attribute. Additional studies are needed that would include larger study populations and track the same students year by year as to how and why their empathy levels change during their training.

A Primary Adenosquamous Carcinoma of the Stomach: Report of Two Cases
(2017-07-01) Gecer, MELİN; Unver, NURCAN; HASBAHCECI, Mustafa; Gucin, ZÜHAL; Tosuner, ZEYNEP; Akcakaya, ADEM; Arici, Sema; GEÇER, MELİN; ÜNVER, NURCAN; GÜCİN, ZÜHAL; TOSUNER, ZEYNEP; ÇOBAN, EZGİ; AKÇAKAYA, ADEM; ARICI, DILEK SEMA
Primary gastric adenosquamous carcinomas are extremely rare tumors. A gradual transition between the malignant glandular and squamous components of the tumor is seen on performing a histopathological evaluation. These tumors are known to have poorer clinical outcomes than conventional adenocarcinomas. We aimed to present two cases of primary adenosquamous carcinomas that were diagnosed at the later stage in our institute.

Hamartoma of the breast in two patients: A case report
(2013-08-01T00:00:00Z) Sonmez, FATMA CAVİDE; Gucin, ZÜHAL; Yildiz, PELİN; Tosuner, ZEYNEP; SÖNMEZ, FATMA CAVİDE; GÜCİN, ZÜHAL; YILDIZ, PELİN; TOSUNER, ZEYNEP
Breast hamartomas are rare, benign, tumor-like nodules composed of glandular, adipose and fibrous tissue. The hamartoma was first described in 1971 as a lipofibroadenoma, fibroadenolipoma or adenolipoma, based on the predominant component of the breast tissue. Clinical findings resemble fibroadenoma and if there is a palpable mass, the patients may receive an immediate diagnosis. Ductal hyperplasia, apocrine metaplasia, calcification and adenosis may occur within the hamartoma, with rarer instances of lobular or ductal intraepithelial neoplasms. Although hamartoma is usually benign, a malignant transformation is possible. An excision and histological examination is necessary for the differential diagnosis and also for any epithelial lesions of the hamartoma. Simple excision is enough for treatment if there is no coincidental epithelial malignant lesion. The patients in the present study were treated by simple excision as there were no proliferative changes in the lesions. No recurrence or other problems were detected in the 18-month follow-up. The current study presents two cases of breast hamartoma that were diagnosed as an adenolipoma and a fibroadenolipoma, and then describes the macroscopic and microscopic observations of these lesions.
