Background: Workplace violence against healthcare providers including the medical students being an important issue all over the World. The aim of this study is to survey the medical students about exposure to workplace violence (WPV) while they are doing their medical training in private tertiary hospitals. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out among all medical students (4th, 5th, and 6th class) attending a teaching hospital at Bezmialem Vakif University (BVU), Istanbul, Turkey. A total of 150 students in the 2017-2018 academic year were recruited in this study. Data were collected using a modified questionnaire through a face to face interview. Data were analyzed using SPSS 16. Results: About one-third of the surveyed students (54, 36.0%) exposed to violence and 71.3% of them witnessed incidents of violence against healthcare providers at the workplace. The prevalence of physical violence and verbal abuse among medical students was reported at 5.5% and 92.6% respectively. About 81.5% were females compared to 18.5% of their counterparts. Patients (38.9%) and their relatives (61.1%) were the main sources of the violence respectively. More than half (57.0%) of students exposed to violence at outpatient services and 25.9% at the emergency room and 16.7% at inpatient wards. Few of them (22, 14.7%) thought that they will get support if they make a complaint. Conclusion: Being a medical student and has direct contact with patients and their relative is not always safe practice. Our results suggested a high prevalence of verbal and physical abuse against medical students. Health sector authorities should adopt a restrictive and clear strategy to protect medical students and other healthcare providers.

Predictive role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios for diagnosis of acute appendicitis during pregnancy
(2015-11-01T00:00:00Z) Yazar, Fatih Mehmet; Bakacak, Murat; Emre, Arif; Urfalioglu, Aykut; Serin, Salih; Cengiz, Emrah; Bulbuloglu, ERTAN; BÜLBÜLOĞLU, ERTAN
Acute appendicitis (AA) is not uncommon during pregnancy but can be difficult to diagnose. This study evaluated the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in addition to conventional diagnostic indicators of the disease to diagnose AA during pregnancy. Age, gestational age, white blood cell (WBC) count, Alvarado scores, C-reactive protein (CRP), lymphocyte count, NLR and PLR were compared among 28 pregnant women who underwent surgery for AA, 35 pregnant women wrongly suspected as having AA, 29 healthy pregnant women, and 30 nonpregnant healthy women. Mean WBC counts and CRP levels were higher in women with proven AA than in those of control groups (all p < 0.05). Among all the groups, the median NLR and PLR were significantly different in women with proven AA (all p < 0.05). Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to determine cut-off values for WBC count, CRP, lymphocyte count, NLR and PLR, and multiple logistic regression analysis showed that NLR and PLR used with routine methods could diagnose AA with 90.5% accuracy. Used in addition to routine diagnostic methods, NLR and PLR increased the accuracy of the diagnosis of AA in pregnant women. Copyright (C) 2015, Kaohsiung Medical University. Tıp Fakültesi Son Sınıf Öğrencilerin Tıpta Uzmanlık Sınavında Tercihlerini Etkileyen Faktörler ve Acil Tıp Uzmanlığı Dalı Hakkında Tutumları
(2021-03-01T00:00:00Z) Göksu, Muhammet Mert; Taşlıdere, Bahadır; TAŞLIDERE, BAHADIR
Aim: It is important to investigate the factors affecting the choice of the specialty area of medical students. Determining the factors that affect this selection reveals the priorities that students take into account. It is important to investigate the prejudices about not choosing emergency medicine and some surgical branches which are in a strategic position. Solution-oriented strategies should be developed in this regard. Material and Methods: This study includes 86 of the final year students of the Faculty of Medicine. The participation rate in the survey was 80.4% and all participants- approvals were received. The questionnaire developed by the researchers was used as a data collection tool in the study. The survey consisted of 40 questions. 10 of the questions were for socio-demographic information, 30 of them included the reasons for choosing the medical school, the reasons for taking the specialty examination in medicine, the desired and unwanted specialties. 27 of these were Likert type questions. Results: 46 of the participants were female (53.3%), 40 of them were male (46.5%). Among our students, it is seen that the main reason for choosing Medical Faculty is -willingness to help people- (75.6%) and -a promising profession- (69.8%). In addition, the family influence in this preference was found to be 55.8%. Our question -Would you consider Emergency Medicine Specialist as your first choice?- Was answered negatively at a rate of 72%. The most preferred reason for those who think to choose; were the advantages of working on a seizure in emergency medicine. The biggest negative thought about emergency medicine has been its physical and psychological severity, the high number of seizures, and the fear of being exposed to violence. Dermatology and cardiology were the most desired departments among the specialty branches, while gynecology and obstetrics, General surgery, and pediatry were among the undesirable departments. Conclusion: The biggest obstacle to emergency medicine choices was the exhausting seizures and the fear of exposure to violence. The future plans of the final year students of the Faculty of Medicine do not only concern themselves but also the future of the departments that are not preferred. It is necessary to determine the factors that affect the surgical branches and emergency medicine preferences of the students. In this way, studies should be carried out for factors that are perceived negatively and important strategic expertise branches for our future should be supported. Effect of bisphosphonate as an adjunct treatment for chronic periodontitis on gingival crevicuar fluid levels of nuclear factor-B-K ligand (RANKL) and osteoprotegerin in postmenopausal osteoporosis
(2017-03-01T00:00:00Z) Ozden, Feyza O.; Sakallioglu, Elif E.; Demir, ESRA; Bilgici, Birsen; Tuncel, Ozgur K.; Gokosmanoglu, Feyzi; Atmaca, Aysegul; DEMİR, ESRA
Osteoporosis and periodontal disease are linked by an altered receptor activator of nuclear factor B-K ligand and osteoprotegerin ratio (RANKL/OPG), and medical treatment with bisphosphonate (BP) may help control these molecules. The effect of BP on clinical findings and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) values of RANKL and OPG using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays was evaluated in postmenopausal women; 13 patients with both chronic periodontitis and osteoporosis (group A), 12 systemically healthy patients with chronic periodontitis (group B), 12 periodontally healthy patients with osteoporosis (group C), and 10 systemically and periodontally healthy individuals (group D). Recordings were repeated at the end of months 1, 6, and 12 in groups A, B, and C. At the baseline, groups A and B exhibited the lowest OPG values (P 0.05) or during the observation period (P > 0.008). The use of BP may be effective in preventing periodontal breakdown by controlling the levels of these markers in osteoporosis as an adjunct to periodontal treatment.

Urinary system stones can be classified according to size, location, X-ray characteristics, aetiology of formation, composition, and risk of recurrence. Especially urolithiasis during pregnancy is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. In most cases, it becomes symptomatic in the second or third trimester. Diagnostic options in pregnant women are limited due to the possible teratogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic risk of foetal radiation exposure. Clinical management of a pregnant urolithiasis patient is complex and demands close collaboration between patient, obstetrician and urologist. We would like to review current diagnosis and treatment modalities of stone disease of pregnant woman.
