These pathogens are associated with two different and severe illnesses; hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. Although frequently reported in Europe, until now only 12 cases from the western Black Sea region, 2 from Giresun, 1 from Istanbul have been reported in Turkey. In patients presenting with fever, thrombocytopenia and acute kidney injury (AKI), hantavirus infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
