Abstract
Introduction:Auditory attention, is the ability to be prepared for and focus on any auditory stimulus, and to be ready to receive a different stimulus at any time. Auditory attention is very important for children who are exposed to auditory information in a noisy environment such as a classroom environment.Purpose:With this study, it was aimed to develop a rapid and reliable test method that can be applied for children, in which frequency-specific auditory attention can be evaluated in silence and in the presence of noise.Materials and Methods:In the sound recording studio, the words that were determined to be easily understood by the children were recorded and the recorded words were assigned to the general list, low frequency, medium frequency, and high frequency lists according to their spectrogram characteristics, with 21 words in each list. A target word was determined for each list and this target word was arranged 5 times in random order in the lists. Low-pass filter, high-pass filter, and band pass filter are used respectively for low-frequency list, high-frequency list and mid-frequency list. The test material was applied binaural at 50 dB SPL in an acoustic cabin on 20 female and 20 male participants aged 10-13 years without hearing loss, neurological, and metabolic disease. General list, low frequency, medium frequency, and high frequency word lists were presented in silence and noise, and participants were asked to press the button when they heard the target word. Results:A significant difference in auditory attention scores due to gender was observed in only one list (general list 3), while the performances of General List 3 and High Frequency List 3 presented in noise were significantly lower than General list 1 and High Frequency List 1 presented in silence, respectively. While no correlation was observed with age in the developed Auditory Attention Test. It was concluded that the test was reliable according to the test-retest results. No significant frequency-specific differences were observed among the filtered word lists. Conclusion:As a result of the study, changes in auditory attention in the presence of background noise were revealed and no frequency-specific effect was observed in auditory attention in normal participants. The reliability of the test-retest evaluation of the Frequency-Specific Auditory Attention Test developed has been ensured, and it is planned to ensure its validity by applying it to different groups in future studies.
