Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is increasing in the world, regardless of whether the east-west or rich-poor society. Due to co-morbid diseases, treatment of obesity is extremely important. Obez patients use traditional weight loss methods such as diet, exercise and medical treatments firstly. Patients who do not achieve success with these methods are referred to bariatric surgery. While bariatric surgery is the most effective method for long-term weight loss, it can cause nutritional deficiencies and lead to anemia at the same time. The aim of this study is to retrospectively investigate the adequacy of the supportive treatments given to patients who underwent bariatric surgery by looking at preoperative and postoperative haematologic parameters. Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records of 760 patients between the age of 18 and 65 who underwent bariatric surgery. The records of the 266 patients could not be reached due to various reasons. B12 parenteral therapy, oral iron and folic acid replacement therapy are given to 494 patients who can be followed up at regular intervals. We compared hemogram, iron, iron binding capacity, ferritin, B12 vitamin and folic acid values of these patients preop and at first visit (1. month), 3., 6., 12. and 24. month post surgery. Results: The post operative B12 vitamin, folic acid, iron, ferritn, hemoglobin and haematocrit values of the patients were significantly higher than the preoperative levels (p<0.05). Post operative leucocytes, thrombocytes and iron binding capacity levels were significantly lower than the preoperative levels (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although anemia did not occur and blood parameters are seen at normal limits in patients who can be followed up at regular intervals and with regular replacement therapy in the bariatric surgical outpatient clinic in our hospital, we do not know the situation in patients who could not be followed up regularly (about 1/3 of the total patient population). We suggest that an experienced team will be needed to prevent postoperative long-term complications, resolve complications and follow up patients for a long time.
