Medical treatment in childhood metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma: case report
(2012-01-01T00:00:00Z) ÇAKIR, FATMA BETÜL; Kebudi, Rejin; GÖRGÜN, Ömer Nafi Halil; Keskin, Erbug; ÇAKIR, FATMA BETÜL
Adrenocortical carcinoma is a rare endocrine tumor in childhood. It is curable when it is resected totally. However, medical therapy is challenging in patients with metastatic disease. Herein, we present the response to various salvage chemotherapy modalities in addition to mitotane therapy, which were administered to a child with progressive and metastatic adrenocortical tumor. The patient has been under follow-up with progressive disease for 17 months.

Management of diffuse pontine gliomas in children: recent developments
(2013-10-01) ÇAKIR, FATMA BETÜL; Kebudi, Rejin; ÇAKIR, FATMA BETÜL
The prognosis for children with diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPGs) is dismal. Although DIPGs constitute only 10-15 % of all pediatric brain tumors, they are the main cause of death in this group with a median survival of less than 12 months. Standard therapy involves radiotherapy, which produces transient neurologic improvement. Despite several clinical trials having been conducted, including trials on targeted agents to assess their efficacy, there is no clear improvement in prognosis. However, knowledge of DIPG biology is increasing, mainly as a result of research using biopsy and autopsy samples. In this review, we discuss recent studies in which systemic therapy was administered prior to, concomitantly with, or after radiotherapy. The discussion also includes novel therapeutic options in DIPG. Continuing multimodal and multitargeted therapies might lead to an improvement in the dismal prognosis of the disease.

Interferon-? for unresectable progressive and symptomatic plexiform neurofibromas
(2013-04-01) Kebudi, Rejin; ÇAKIR, FATMA BETÜL; Görgün, Ömer; ÇAKIR, FATMA BETÜL
Neurofibromas are the most common manifestations of neurofibromatosis type-1. They occasionally cause pain or progressive loss of function due to nerve compression. Optimal treatment approach is still challenging and the current treatment results are not satisfactory. Four cases of plexiform neurofibromas with various clinical presentations and an addendum to a previously published report on a patient who had relief from pain and/or regression of tumor volume after treatment with interferon-alpha 2a are presented.
