Aim: Studies on drugs or alternative therapies are still the main treatment options for PNI. In this study, we aimed to research the effects of PBM and OT on nerve repair in a rat sciatic injury model. Material and Methods: 29 Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: control (n = 2), sham (n = 9), OT (n = 9) and PBM (n = 9). After 30 days of surgery and treatments, tissue specimens and blood samples were taken for histological and biochemical processing. Histological evaluations were performed at light and electron microscopy levels. Myelin basic protein (MBP) and S100 from the rat serum were analysed also. Results: The OT and PBM groups had a significant increase in regeneration of the sciatic nerve in light microscopic evaluation. In the PBM and OT groups, Schwann cells (SC) around the axons and also axons with a thin myelin sheath were seen, regarded as signs of the myelination process in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examinations. Discussion: OT and PBM both resulted in a good healing pattern for sciatic nerve injury in the rat model. Therefore, OT and PBM are considered to be simple and reliable alternative treatment methods for PNI.

Maxillofacial Surgery and Craniofacial Deformity: Practices and Updates
    (2020-07-01T00:00:00Z) Yücesoy, Türker; YÜCESOY, TÜRKER
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) may be related to the appearance of a body part or may sometimes arise from concerns about a body function. Currently, this disorder was included in contemporary classification systems with DSM-5. The majority of BDD patients first consult dermatologists, surgeons, and more often plastic surgeons, rather than psychiatrists. Therefore, it is difficult to determine the prevalence of this disorder in the psychiatric society. The oral and maxillofacial region is highly associated with face deformities, and the patients with BDD are applying to those clinics even without self-awareness of their disorders. It has been reported that most of the orthognathic surgical patients are associated with the facial appearance of surgical motivations and will have similar psychological motivations to cosmetic surgery patients. Moreover, the orthodontics, prosthetic and restorative dentistry are the branches of dentistry that mostly the patients come with esthetic complaints. Studies on BDD have not yet received the value they deserve concerning the prevalence and severity. Researches in dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery are much less, and the individuals suffering from BDD are not well-known among dentists/oral and maxillofacial surgeons; therefore, the frequency of BDD patients is not noticed and treated properly.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the anxiety levels among dentistry students and students from other departments and to assess the effects of classes at pre-clinic labs or dentistry clinics on the dental fear of dentistry students. Materials and Methods: A total of 993 students, including 744 (75%) women and 249 (25%) men, were asked to answer the Modified Dental Anxiety scale (MDAS) and Dental Fear scale. Four groups were created according to the departments: Dentistry (group 1), medicine (group 2), health-related (group 3) and others (group 4). The participants scored their anxiety levels from 1 (no anxiety) to 5 (high anxiety). Statistical analysis was performed and values of p<0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The dentistry students scored lower than the other three groups in the MDAS (p<0.001). For the education process of dentistry, no significant difference was observed in other questions regarding pre-clinic dentistry and dentistry clinic periods (p>0.05). Conclusion: Results of this study showed that the dental anxiety levels of dentistry students were lower than those of students from other departments and that preclinic or dentistry clinic classes did not affect dental anxiety.

A Noval Alveolar Bone Grafting Technique For The Insufficient Mandibular Anterior Alveolar Bone: Horse-Shoe Technique
(2020-10-01T00:00:00Z) YÜCESOY, TÜRKER; ALIZADE, SAMIRA; YÜCESOY, TÜRKER
Objective: Introduction: The purpose of these case report is to report a new technique to provide a sufficient alveolar bone for implant surgery. In this technique, the mandibulary anterior region was aimed to be used as a donor site and the grafted site, simultaneously. Case: Two elderly patients, whose vertical bone height to the mandibular inter-mental region was sufficient but the horizontal bone thickness is insufficient, applied to our faculty clinic. During the operations, the sufficent bone did not exist even in the lower section of the mandible anterior. In these cases, instate of using burs to eliminate the height of the bone, it was decided to use these bony structures as a bone graft in the buccal side of the mandible where the implants were planned to be placed. The piezosurgery was preferred and the horse-shoe shaped block bone graft was fixed horizontally to the anterior region of the mandible with screws. In both cases, the crest split technique was performed to allow placing two implants before these operations. The postoperative periods were uneventful. The control CBCT scan showed a good new bone organization allowing for the placement of a dental implant even in failure situations in 3-4 months. Conclusion: Here we report a novel alveolar bone graftng technique;which was represented as -horse-shoe technique-.The major advantages were no donor site morbidit less risk of the complication of the failure of the bone grafting due to the autogenous bone grafts, and gain a thicker keratinized periodontal tissue in the buccal side of the implants.
