Description

© 2015 Eker HH, et al.Background: Violence among young people is an important public health problem in society. Act of violence seen in schools is disturbing students- learning processes and inhibiting their developments generally results in emotional abuse, physical injury and death. Objectives: This study is conducted in order to find out the prevalence of and exposure to violence, which is an important public health problem, in schools and to determine the factors affecting thereto. Specific factors investigated were exposure to violence, gender, age, type of school, economic status of families and level of education of mothers. Method: This cross-sectional study was performed between March 2012 and May 2012. The population is 1575 students from 9th grade and the study is completed with 1405 students accepting to participate therein. A study questionnaire form established based on the -Youth Risk Behaviour Survey (YRBS)- prepared by CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) is used as data collecting tool. Results: The ratios of each violence-related behaviour are 35.8% and 14.1%, respectively for boys whereas 20.4% and 6.4% for girls. These behaviours are statistically more common among boys than girls (p < 0.05). It was found out that there is a significant relationship between the students- family income level and getting involved in a physical fight in school (p < 0.05).Though no significant relationship is detected between mother-s educational level and getting involved in a physical fight and carrying weapons, ratios of gang membership is 6.2% for students whose a mother is illiterate and is 14.3% for student whose mother-s educational level is high school and above (p < 0.05) Conclusions: It is observed that each violence-related behaviour is more common among boys and with the increase in the mother-s education, tendency of being a member of a gang and getting involved in a physical fight accordingly increases.

Aim: It is important to investigate the factors affecting the choice of the specialty area of medical students. Determining the factors that affect this selection reveals the priorities that students take into account. It is important to investigate the prejudices about not choosing emergency medicine and some surgical branches which are in a strategic position. Solution-oriented strategies should be developed in this regard. Material and Methods: This study includes 86 of the final year students of the Faculty of Medicine. The participation rate in the survey was 80.4% and all participants- approvals were received. The questionnaire developed by the researchers was used as a data collection tool in the study. The survey consisted of 40 questions. 10 of the questions were for socio-demographic information, 30 of them included the reasons for choosing the medical school, the reasons for taking the specialty examination in medicine, the desired and unwanted specialties. 27 of these were Likert type questions. Results: 46 of the participants were female (53.3%), 40 of them were male (46.5%). Among our students, it is seen that the main reason for choosing Medical Faculty is -willingness to help people- (75.6%) and -a promising profession- (69.8%). In addition, the family influence in this preference was found to be 55.8%. Our question -Would you consider Emergency Medicine Specialist as your first choice?- Was answered negatively at a rate of 72%. The most preferred reason for those who think to choose; were the advantages of working on a seizure in emergency medicine. The biggest negative thought about emergency medicine has been its physical and psychological severity, the high number of seizures, and the fear of being exposed to violence. Dermatology and cardiology were the most desired departments among the specialty branches, while gynecology and obstetrics, General surgery, and pediatry were among the undesirable departments. Conclusion: The biggest obstacle to emergency medicine choices was the exhausting seizures and the fear of exposure to violence. The future plans of the final year students of the Faculty of Medicine do not only concern themselves but also the future of the departments that are not preferred. It is necessary to determine the factors that affect the surgical branches and emergency medicine preferences of the students. In this way, studies should be carried out for factors that are perceived negatively and important strategic expertise branches for our future should be supported. A Catalyst for Social Economy: Society 5.0
(Istanbul University Publication, 2023-02-01) Toker K.; TOKER, KEREM
As our planet moves towards the middle of the 21st century, it faces a dizzying digital transformation process. This transformation brings along with it unique and innovative solutions to numerous social, organizational, and managerial issues. The most tangible of these solutions so far is the vision of Society 5.0 announced by the Japanese government in 2016. Within this scope, the purpose of this chapter is to develop conceptual insight into the reasons for the emergence, components, and goals of Society 5.0. Up-to-date research and current reports on the topic have been examined in this context, and a conceptual framework is formed. The findings show that many digital tools of Society 5.0 are already used in economies, but policymakers discuss these tools’ human-centered reuse. As a result, a positive futuristic perspective has been drawn that humanity will continue its life on a more habitable planet for decades to come and unite digital and physical space. Bezmialem Vakıf Üniversitesi Hastanesi Acil Servisine Başvuran Adli Nitelikli Olguların ve Adli Raporların Değerlendirilmesi

Evaluation of Forensic Cases and Forensic Reports Appealing to Bezmialem Vakıf University Emergency DepartmentIntroductionForensic cases are all events caused by intent, negligence, recklessness or carelessness that cause a person to be physically or mentally victimized (1, 2). Firearm injuries, stab injuries, traffic accidents, falls, beatings, work accidents, poisonings, burns, electric shocks, sexual assaults, all kinds of suicide attempts, torture allegations, suspicious or unexpected deaths can be considered as forensic cases. The first place where these cases are evaluated is usually the emergency departments. Therefore, physicians working in emergency departments have a great responsibility (3, 4). We retrospectively evaluated the forensic reports written in the emergency department of our hospital with this study, which we intend to do in order to write more accurate forensic reports. With this study, it is aimed to increase the awareness of newly graduated medical students and emergency physicians about forensic reports and thus to keep their knowledge about the subject up-to-date.MethodsOur study was carried out retrospectively in Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine Emergency Service after approval of the Ethics Committee. The study was completed by examining the forensic reports written between 01.09.2020 and 30.09.2020.ResultsThe ratio of forensic cases admitted to the total number of patients within a one-month period was approximately 2.6%. The decrease in the number of emergency services due to COVID-19 and other restrictive measures may have decreased the rate of forensic cases admitted (4, 5). In our study, 78.9% (157 people) of forensic cases were men and the mean age was 34.26 ± 11.89. The proportion of women was 21.1% and the mean age was 37.21 ± 12.54. Men are more present in traffic than women. They work in high-risk jobs and have higher rates of alcohol use and substance abuse. For this reason, men are more involved in forensic cases (6). Among the forensic case reasons, 32.2% (64 people) of traffic accidents were the first. In other studies examined, traffic accidents were in the first place as well (7). The second most common reason for men was abuse (19 people), and poisoning for women (10 people) (Table 1). The area with the most frequent injuries was the upper extremity with a rate of 56.3% (112 people), followed by lower extremity (33.2%- 66 people), head- neck (23.1%- 46 people), thorax- back (22.6%- 45 people), abdomen (10.1%- 20 people), pelvis (8.5%- 17 people) and genital area (0.5%- 1 person) (Table 2). 35.2% (70 people) of the reports were prepared due to work related accidents. 87.1% of these cases were men. While the most common cause of work related accidents in males was cuts (49%), it was blunt trauma in females (44%). Only 12.1% of the reports written in the emergency department were written as definitive reports. Temporary forensic reports were prepared for the remaining 175 cases. One of the common problems with forensic reports is that the physician gives a temporary report when he/she is able to give a definitive report (5). It was seen that 50.8% of the reports mentioned if the injury was life-threatening or not. It was stated at a rate of 60.3% whether the injury could be relieved by a simple medical intervention or not. These ratios show that information should be given about the reason for the preparation of the report and its legal dimension. In forensic reports, the answers that are generally expected from the emergency physician are whether the person is life-threatening and whether he/she will recover with simple medical intervention. The deficiencies observed in the preparation of the forensic report can be seen as a neglect of duty for the physician. Emergency physicians should know how to write a forensic report and what their responsibilities are in this regard. Forensic reports must be filled in carefully, detailed and accurately.Student: Kerem Kara 160101066Mentor: Dr.Öğr.Üyesi Bahadır TAŞLIDEREReferences1. Factors Influencing the Total Inpatient Pharmacy Cost at a Tertiary Hospital in Malaysia: A Retrospective Study
(2018-02-13T00:00:00Z) Aljunid, Syed Mohamed; Jadoo, Saad Ahmed Ali
The steady growth of pharmaceutical expenditures is a major concern for health policy makers and health care managers in Malaysia. Our study examined the factors affecting the total inpatient pharmacy cost (TINPC) at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC). In this retrospective study, we used 2011 administration electronic prescriptions records and casemix databases at UKMMC to examine the impact of sociodemographic, diagnostic, and drug variables on the TINPC. Bivariate and multivariate analyses of the factors associated with TINPC were conducted. The mean inpatient pharmacy cost per patient was USD 102.07 (SD = 24.76). In the multivariate analysis, length of stay (LOS; B = 0.349, P < .0005) and severity level III (B = 0.253, P < .0005) were the primary factors affecting the TINPC. For each day increase in the LOS and each increase of a case of severity level III, there was an increase of approximately USD 11.97 and USD 171.53 in the TINPC per year, respectively. Moreover, the number of prescribed items of drugs and supplies was positively associated with the TINPC (B = 0.081, P < .0005). Gender appears to have affected the TINPC; male patients seem to be associated with a higher TINPC than females (mean = 139.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 112.97-166.13, P < .001). Surgical procedures were associated with higher cost than medical cases (mean = 87.93, 95% CI: 61.00-114.85, P < .001). Malay (MYR 242.02, SD = 65.37) and Chinese (MYR 214.66, SD = 27.99) ethnicities contributed to a lower TINPC compared with Indian (MYR 613.93, SD = 98.41) and other ethnicities (MYR 578.47, SD = 144.51). A longer hospitalization period accompanied by major complications and comorbidities had the greatest influence on the TINPC.

COVID -19 pandemic is a worldwide typical biopsychosocial crisis
(2020-08-01T00:00:00Z) Al-Ezzi, Saad Ahmed Ali; AL-EZZI, SAAD AHMED ALİ
Since December 2019, the world has been stunned by the speed of the spread of the COVID-19. All the possibilities were likely, except that people would hide in their homes for fear of contracting the disease, as it was very unlikely. The lockdown was imposed severely, and people panicked, and their interest has limited to providing food and caring for health and family. The effect of isolation and the prevention of social interaction was apparent in the individuals- psychological behavior. Unfortunately, the incidence of depression, anxiety, and domestic violence increased, which negatively impact family stability in the short and medium-term. The pathological, psychological, and social impact of COVID-19 imposes a framework for dealing with the pandemic based on the biopsychosocial model.

Associated factors of legal child marriage in Turkey: Pregnancy and below-average intelligence
(2021-01-01T00:00:00Z) Yilmaz, Semra; Akyuz, FATMA; Arslan, Naheeda Mohamed; AKYÜZ KARACAN, FATMA
© The Author(s), 2021. Published by Cambridge University Press.Turkish civil code permits child marriages at 16-17 years of age, but if a child is 16 years old judicial consent is needed. Before making a final decision on marriage consent, the judges refer these children to the doctor, and ask whether they are psychologically and physically ready for marriage. While the literature on child marriage in Turkey is rich, little is known about the underlying factors leading 16-year-old girls to request legal child marriage. This study examined the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of girls applying to the courts for judicial marriage consent. Hospital records of girls admitted to a hospital in the Istanbul province of Turkey between January 2015 and December 2018 for the assessment of their physical and mental readiness for marriage were scanned. Of the 122 girls admitted to hospital for this purpose, eight were excluded as they had incomplete data, leaving 114 participating girls. All girls were Turkish citizens and had been referred from the law courts. Being pregnant/having a child (54.4%), having had a religious (non-legal) marriage (49.1%) and having an intelligence score of less than 90 (91.2%) were common among the participants. Among those who had a religious marriage, 78.6% were pregnant/had a child at the time of evaluation and 32.1% reported that they were pregnant before their religious marriage took place. None of the participants reported being forced to marry, but many had run away from home to marry (33.3%). Among those running away to marry, the major reason for deciding to do this was being pregnant (63.2%). Running away from home to marry was found to be related to lower parental educational levels (p<0.05). Contrary to the literature, the findings indicate that girls who request judicial consent for legal child marriage in Turkey are not being forced to marry. However, lower educational level seems to be an important factor. Below-average intelligence of the girl and her parents, running away from home to marry and early unsafe sexual intercourse, leading to child pregnancy, were found to be closely associated with legal child marriage in Turkey.
